Donald Trump seemed to struggle to stay awake during a long, three-hour meeting in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. This was the first gathering of what he calls his “Board of Peace,” a group he brought together to help raise money for rebuilding and stabilizing Gaza. Even though he was physically there, it wasn’t always clear if he was fully alert and engaged the entire time, since he appeared to have trouble keeping his eyes open.
During the meeting, when he wasn’t sitting quietly with his eyes drooping, Trump spoke in his usual long and winding style. He jumped between topics, talking about things like the physical appearance of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña, and again brought up his disappointment about not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. His comments moved from one subject to another in a way that many people have come to recognize as typical for him.
This isn’t the first time Trump has appeared to nod off in public. Over the past few months, there have been several moments where he looked like he was dozing during official events.
For example, last July he seemed to have difficulty staying awake during a televised White House event focused on health technology, called “Making Health Technology Great Again.” Viewers noticed that he appeared tired and struggled to keep his eyes open.
In November, after he appeared to fall asleep during a press meeting, California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked him by calling him “Dozy Don.” The nickname quickly spread online as critics pointed to more moments where Trump looked fatigued at public appearances.
Then in early December, he again appeared very tired at two separate events held less than a week apart. In both cases, people watching said he looked like he was barely managing to stay awake.
