Whether it is the loose skin around his neck, his facial expressions, or his famous hairstyle, something about Donald Trump’s appearance often becomes a major talking point online.
This time, attention has turned to the US president’s well-known yellow-blond hair after it appeared very different in two videos reportedly filmed only days apart.
On Monday, August 3, the 80-year-old was filmed walking towards and boarding Air Force One while strong winds blew through his hair. As the wind lifted and moved his carefully arranged hairstyle, viewers claimed they could see an area on his head that appeared much thinner than usual.
The footage quickly spread across social media, with some people questioning whether Trump’s hair was natural or whether he might be using some kind of wig, toupee, or hairpiece. Others argued that the wind had simply disturbed his hairstyle and made his scalp more visible.
Only a few days later, Trump appeared in public again while carrying out his presidential duties. However, his hair looked noticeably fuller, thicker, and more carefully styled than it had in the windy footage.
The sudden difference led to even more public speculation. Some people wondered how his hair could appear thin in one video and then look much thicker in another recorded shortly afterwards.
Trump and his representatives have not publicly confirmed or denied that he uses a wig or toupee. There is also no clear evidence proving that he was wearing a hairpiece in either video.
As the discussion continued, Mirror US asked London-based medical aesthetician Dr Gizem Seymenoglu to examine the visible differences between the two appearances.
Dr Gizem said there appeared to be a clear difference in the thickness and volume of Trump’s hair. In the outdoor footage, she said his hair looked much finer because the wind caused parts of it to lift and move away from his head. This made the overall coverage appear thinner and exposed more of his scalp.
In the later indoor appearance, however, Trump’s hair seemed much fuller, thicker, and more voluminous. Dr Gizem stressed that the difference alone was not enough to prove that Trump was wearing a wig or toupee.
She explained that if the videos were genuinely recorded only a few days apart, a wig, hairpiece, or another form of hair enhancement could be one possible explanation. However, she said styling, lighting, camera angles, and hair products could also create a dramatic change in appearance.
Dr Gizem also dismissed the idea that a recent hair transplant could have produced such a noticeable difference in only a few days.
She explained that transplanted hair does not grow immediately. Most patients begin seeing visible new growth around six months after the procedure, while the final thickness can take between 12 and 18 months to develop.
This means that even if Trump had received a hair transplant at some point, it would not explain his hair appearing much thicker within a matter of days. The publicly available videos also do not provide enough evidence to confirm whether he has ever received such treatment.
Natural hair growth is equally unlikely to explain the change. According to Dr Gizem, human hair usually grows by around one to one-and-a-half centimetres each month. Even when someone uses an effective treatment for hair loss, it normally takes several months before any noticeable improvement in thickness can be seen.
However, the appearance of someone’s hair can be changed very quickly without any new growth. A professional blow-dry can add volume, while sprays, powders, thickening products, and hair fibres can make thinning areas appear more densely covered.
Changing the direction in which the hair is combed can also help cover exposed areas of the scalp. Bright lighting may make thin areas easier to see, while softer lighting and a carefully chosen camera angle can make the same hair look much fuller.
The wind was also an important factor in the first video. Trump’s hairstyle usually appears to depend on sections of hair being carefully combed and arranged. When strong wind lifts those sections, areas that are normally covered may become more noticeable.
If Trump were using a high-quality custom hair system, Dr Gizem estimated that it could cost between $2,000 and $6,000 for the first piece in the United States. Maintenance, refitting, cleaning, and replacement costs could then increase the total amount considerably.
However, she made clear that this was only a general estimate and not proof that Trump owns or wears such a system.
Based only on the images and videos available to the public, the expert concluded that there are several possible reasons why Trump’s hair appeared thin on one occasion and much fuller days later. A hairpiece is one possibility, but careful styling, thickening products, lighting, wind, and camera angles could produce a similar effect without any real change in the amount of hair on his head.
