Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has opened up about how much life has changed for him since joining the nation’s highest court more than three decades ago.
Speaking during a judicial conference on Thursday, Thomas admitted that taking part in normal public activities has become far more difficult because of growing security concerns surrounding public officials and judges in America today.
According to reports from CNN, Thomas explained that when he first became a circuit justice many years ago, the atmosphere was very different and far less tense. But now, he said, the risks have increased significantly, making everyday situations feel far more dangerous and unpredictable than before.
Thomas told attendees that one of the biggest changes he has witnessed during his 34 years on the Supreme Court is the growing fear surrounding public life. He described the current environment as “very, very dicey,” suggesting that security threats against judges and political figures have become a serious concern in modern America.
His comments come at a time when the Supreme Court has reportedly been asking Congress for additional security support to deal with rising physical threats and cyberattacks directed at members of the judiciary.
Concerns about safety have become increasingly common across the political world, with many lawmakers, judges, commentators, and public figures speaking openly about receiving threats against their lives.
In recent years, political tensions across the United States have continued to rise sharply. President Donald Trump himself has reportedly survived multiple assassination attempts since 2024, adding to fears about political violence in the country.
The situation became even more alarming after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was reportedly shot and killed during an event in Utah in September 2025, shocking many Americans and sparking renewed conversations about political hatred and public safety.
At the same time, Thomas continues to face criticism over ethics concerns that have followed him for years.
Reports about expensive vacations, luxury trips, and gifts allegedly provided by wealthy political donors have placed him under heavy public scrutiny. Critics and some political voices have called for him to resign from the Supreme Court, especially since justices do not face term limits and can remain on the bench for life.
Despite the backlash, Thomas has strongly rejected the accusations and negative reports surrounding him.
He has described many of the claims as “lies” and “nastiness,” making it clear that he has no intention of stepping down from the court anytime soon. After serving for more than three decades, Thomas remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in America’s judicial system.
