Mary Trump, President Donald Trump’s niece, has claimed that her uncle has changed in a way that she believes is affecting how he speaks and reacts in public. Speaking during an episode of Molly Jong-Fast’s Fast Politics podcast, Mary, a clinical psychologist and longtime critic of the president, argued that Trump no longer seems able to judge how his audience is responding to him in the way he once could.
During the conversation, Jong-Fast asked whether Trump had previously been better at avoiding comments that could hurt him politically or at knowing when to stop before going too far. Mary agreed, saying that in the past, her uncle had a stronger ability to “read the room.” According to her, he knew how to test people’s reactions by pushing boundaries while also recognizing when he needed to change course.
She pointed to one example from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mary said that after Trump encouraged people to get vaccinated at one of his rallies and received boos from sections of the crowd, he quickly adjusted his message. She argued that he realized the reaction was negative and avoided repeating the same remarks in later speeches.
However, Mary believes that ability has now disappeared. She claimed that Trump no longer seems capable of changing direction when his message is not being well received. Instead, she suggested he continues speaking in the same way even when audiences react negatively.
According to Mary, this change could be linked to what she believes is a decline in his ability to control his impulses. She said that losing impulse control can be associated with broader cognitive changes, although she stressed that this was her personal opinion. President Trump has not been diagnosed with any cognitive condition, and there has been no official medical finding confirming the claims made during the interview.
The discussion also turned to Trump’s recent appearance at the reorganized White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Molly Jong-Fast argued that the president struggled during the speech, saying he repeated the same joke several times, continued criticizing the audience, and failed to adjust his remarks even when they did not appear to connect with those in attendance. She described the performance as one that surprised many observers.
Mary Trump responded by saying she no longer finds such moments surprising. She argued that, in her view, the president’s recent public appearances fit a pattern she believes has become increasingly noticeable.
She went on to claim that Trump appears to be struggling in several areas, including emotionally, psychologically, cognitively, and physically. Mary also said that because he was speaking to an audience she believes he strongly disagrees with, and while delivering a speech she claimed he likely had little role in preparing, he eventually abandoned the prepared remarks and returned to familiar personal grievances.
According to Mary, he seemed unable to recognize that his approach was no longer having the same impact it once did. She argued that he continued speaking without adapting to the audience’s response, something she believes reflects a broader change in his behavior.
Mary Trump’s comments reflect her own opinions and assessments. President Trump has not publicly acknowledged the claims, and there is no official medical evidence showing that he has been diagnosed with any cognitive impairment.
