Four Migrants Lose Their Lives After Attempting a Dangerous Night Crossing to the UK Through the English Channel

Four migrants have died and several others have been injured in two separate incidents in the English Channel overnight, as more small boats continued making the dangerous journey from France to the UK. The latest tragedies happened on the same day that 11 migrant boats were launched from Europe’s coastline, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by those attempting the crossing.

The first incident happened shortly after 3am when an overcrowded inflatable boat carrying more than 70 migrants left a beach near Dunkirk. During the journey, three women were pulled from the boat unconscious after an emergency was reported. French rescue teams rushed to the scene and brought them ashore, where paramedics worked desperately to save their lives. Despite their efforts, all three women were pronounced dead at the scene.

Seven other migrants from the same boat were also rescued by emergency crews. However, many of the remaining people on board refused medical help and chose to continue their journey across the Channel. The overcrowded dinghy later carried on towards the UK despite the tragic deaths.

In a separate incident several hours earlier, another migrant boat, believed to be operating as a so-called “taxi boat,” got into difficulty near Hardelot beach, south of Boulogne, around midnight. A man believed to be in his 30s lost his life during the incident.

Six other migrants, including a one-year-old baby, were injured and rushed to hospital for treatment. French authorities later stopped the boat, brought everyone safely ashore and launched an investigation into what happened.

Despite the two deadly incidents, crossings continued throughout the day. Around 75 migrants from another boat arrived at the migrant processing centre at Dover Harbour shortly after 1pm. They were taken ashore to be questioned by immigration officials, while the boat they arrived in was expected to undergo a forensic examination.

The latest deaths came just hours after one of the busiest days for Channel crossings this year. More than 730 migrants were reported to have arrived in Dover in a single day, with the total number of people crossing the Channel since Andy Burnham took office now exceeding 1,600.

Maritime security sources said people-smuggling gangs have once again changed their tactics after increased French police patrols disrupted many of their usual launch points around Calais and Dunkirk. According to the source, smugglers are now sending boats from beaches much farther south, including around the Dieppe area, in an effort to avoid police and make interceptions more difficult.

The source described the situation as a “full-frontal assault” by organised criminal gangs, saying they were now launching multiple boats over a wide stretch of coastline at the same time. The aim, they claimed, is to overwhelm French police and rescue services by forcing them to respond to several crossings at once.

They added that even with millions of pounds in extra funding provided by the UK to help French authorities tackle illegal crossings, officers cannot patrol every beach at the same time. According to the source, the new tactics appear to be working, with hundreds of migrants successfully reaching UK waters while more boats continue launching.

A Government spokesperson said they were deeply saddened by the loss of life, describing every death in the Channel as a tragedy. The spokesperson said the incidents were another reminder of the dangers created by criminal gangs who profit by encouraging vulnerable people to attempt the dangerous sea crossing.

The Government said it would continue working closely with French authorities and international partners to stop the crossings, disrupt the smuggling networks behind them and prevent more lives from being lost. French authorities are leading the investigation into both incidents while rescue teams continue monitoring the Channel for further migrant boats.
