A TikTok creator known as Voyce has shared a story about an uncomfortable encounter he says happened while he was shopping at a Walmart store in Tulsa, Oklahoma. According to him, what started as a normal trip to the checkout quickly turned into an awkward conversation after a woman standing behind him asked whether he had a green card.

Voyce explained that he was simply waiting in a regular checkout line while the cashier scanned his shopping. He said he was keeping to himself and not speaking to anyone when the woman behind him suddenly leaned forward and asked, “Excuse me, do you have a green card?”

He said the question completely caught him off guard. After turning around in surprise, he asked the woman what she had just said. According to Voyce, she repeated the question and then added that she did not see “people like you” around the area very often.

Voyce said he laughed because he could not believe what he had heard. He told the woman that he was born in the United States and had lived there all his life. He joked that the only card he had with him was the debit card he was holding in his hand.

The conversation became even more uncomfortable when, according to Voyce, the woman tried to explain herself. She reportedly told him that she did not mean anything offensive and added that he “talked so well.”

Voyce said that comment made even less sense to him. He asked her what speaking English had to do with having a green card. He then sarcastically replied that he had been practising English since the day he was born, making it clear that English was his first language.

He said the cashier stopped what they were doing and appeared completely stunned by the exchange. According to Voyce, the atmosphere became so quiet that it felt like “you could hear a pin drop.”

The woman then reportedly said she had only been asking a question. Voyce responded by saying he was only answering it. He then told her to leave him alone before calling her a “crazy Karen.” He claimed the woman became embarrassed, turned red, and left the line to use another checkout instead.

As he walked out of the store, Voyce said he could only shake his head over what had happened. At the end of his TikTok video, he included a message encouraging people to stay calm when faced with ignorance. The on-screen text read that you never know who is watching you or what they might say, but that staying calm and smart allows ignorance to reveal itself.

The video quickly attracted attention on TikTok, receiving more than 486,000 views and over 25,000 likes. Thousands of people watched the clip, and many shared their own opinions in the comments.

Some viewers responded with humour. One person joked that they would start asking white people for their green cards or tribal cards instead. Another commenter sarcastically suggested asking people for their high school diploma instead.
