As President Donald Trump prepares for another medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, more questions are being raised about his overall health and whether the public is being given the full picture.
Trump, who will turn 80 next month, is already the oldest person ever inaugurated as president. Because of his age and the pressure that comes with leading the country, some medical experts believe there should be more openness about his physical and mental condition.
One of the doctors speaking publicly is Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist and CNN medical analyst who previously served as Vice President Dick Cheney’s personal heart doctor for many years. He said he is worried about several health issues that people have already noticed in public appearances.
According to Reiner, the American people deserve clear and honest information about the president’s health, especially because the president holds one of the most powerful and demanding positions in the world. He argued that many ordinary professions, including pilots, school bus drivers, and Secret Service agents, are required to undergo regular physical checks to prove they are fit to do their jobs. In his opinion, the same level of transparency should apply to the president and commander in chief.
The White House has shared only limited details about Trump’s health, even though some visible signs have caused concern among observers and medical experts.
Reiner pointed to bruising that has appeared on Trump’s hands in recent months. Earlier explanations from the White House suggested the bruises were caused by excessive handshaking, but Reiner said he does not find that explanation believable. He also mentioned visible swelling around Trump’s ankles, known medically as edema.
The doctor explained that the swelling had previously been described as chronic venous insufficiency, a condition related to poor blood flow in the veins. However, Reiner questioned that explanation because Trump’s earlier medical reports reportedly showed no signs of swelling. He suggested that if the condition appeared suddenly, it could point to a more serious and recent medical issue that deserves further investigation.
Another major concern raised by Reiner involves Trump’s sleeping patterns and energy levels. Trump is known for posting on social media very late at night or very early in the morning, and the doctor said that behavior could be a sign of serious sleep problems or insomnia.
Reiner claimed that Trump appears to struggle with staying awake during the day and said there have been several public moments where the president seemed tired or possibly asleep during official events and meetings. He even referenced concerns from Memorial Day observances at Arlington National Cemetery, where some viewers questioned whether Trump appeared to nod off during the ceremony.
The doctor warned that chronic insomnia and severe sleep problems can have serious effects on older adults. According to him, long-term lack of proper sleep can increase the risk of dementia, heart disease, heart failure, depression, anxiety, and declining mental sharpness. He explained that poor sleep can affect memory, focus, mood, and overall cognitive performance.
Reiner said he would like the White House to explain whether Trump has been properly evaluated for these symptoms and what steps, if any, are being taken to improve his health and sleep quality.
The discussion has once again sparked debate online about how much information presidents should be required to release about their health while serving in office. Some people believe the public has a right to know every important detail about the health of a sitting president, while others argue that medical privacy should still apply even to national leaders.
Trump’s upcoming medical examination is expected to receive close public attention as questions continue to grow about his age, stamina, and ability to handle the intense responsibilities of the presidency.
