Donald Trump’s ‘incredible cognitive dissonance’ leaves CNN anchor in disbelief
A CNN presenter said she was left surprised after watching a video of President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet making very positive statements about his administration, while recent opinion polls appeared to show a very different picture.
During her programme, CNN anchor Erin Burnett showed clips of several senior officials praising Trump and his leadership. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praised the president for being transparent and open with the American people. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also praised Trump’s economic record, saying the US economy under his leadership had become “the envy of the world.” He even said the country’s economic success had gone beyond what America’s Founding Fathers could have imagined.
After showing the clips, Burnett compared those comments with the latest polling results. She pointed to surveys showing that Trump’s public approval rating had fallen to 34 percent, describing it as the lowest approval rating he has received so far during his current term in office.
Burnett said that reaching such a low approval rating at this stage of a presidency was significant. She also highlighted another poll showing that 73 percent of Americans believe the president is focusing on the wrong priorities instead of dealing with the country’s biggest problems.
She described that figure as remarkable, saying that nearly three out of every four Americans felt the president was not paying enough attention to the issues that matter most to them. Burnett said those numbers showed a large gap between what many voters think and the positive picture being presented by the administration.
The programme also showed another clip of Trump speaking confidently about his record. In the video, he said America is now safer, stronger and more successful than it was two years ago. He added that he believes the country is entering what he called a “golden age” and promised that his administration would leave America in better condition than ever before.
Burnett argued that there was a sharp contrast between the president’s comments and the recent polling data. She described the poll results as “stunning” and “unprecedented,” but said the video suggested Trump was not accepting or responding to the concerns reflected in those numbers. She concluded by saying there appeared to be a major disconnect between the administration’s public message and the views expressed by many Americans in the latest opinion polls.
