The top American military commander in Europe has reportedly sent a private warning to the Pentagon, saying the United States may soon face a difficult choice if the conflict with Iran continues.
General Alexus Grynkewich reportedly warned that the U.S. military is becoming overstretched after months of carrying out missile defence operations in the Middle East. According to reports, he told defence officials that without another Navy destroyer being sent to the region, the military could eventually be forced to focus on protecting the U.S. homeland instead of also defending Israel from ballistic missile attacks.
The warning comes as the fighting between Iran, Israel and the United States continues to place heavy pressure on American military forces. U.S. Navy destroyers have been working around the clock to intercept missiles launched toward Israel, while also protecting American military bases across the Middle East from attacks by Iranian-backed groups, including the Houthis in Yemen.
At the same time, American warships have also been taking part in operations linked to President Donald Trump’s strategy in the region, including enforcing a blockade around Iranian ports as part of efforts to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. These additional missions have increased the workload for sailors and equipment, leaving little time for routine maintenance on the ships.
Reports say there are currently five U.S. Navy destroyers operating in the Middle East, with a sixth expected to arrive. However, military officials are said to be concerned that the ships have been deployed for long periods without receiving the maintenance they normally require. The growing strain has raised questions about how long the current level of operations can continue if the conflict does not ease.
The White House and the Israeli Embassy did not publicly comment on the reported warning. A Defence Department official also declined to discuss operational capabilities, saying the department does not comment on media reports about military operations.
Some defence officials have played down the significance of the request, noting that it is common for senior military commanders to ask for additional resources during major military operations. Even so, the reported message highlights concerns that the prolonged conflict is putting increasing pressure on America’s armed forces and could eventually affect its ability to respond to multiple threats at the same time.
The war has also become increasingly unpopular with many Americans. Recent polling suggests that many people are unhappy with the continuing conflict and are worried about its impact on the economy and the rising cost of living. As the fighting continues with no clear end in sight, pressure is growing on the Trump administration to balance military commitments overseas with national defence priorities at home.
