Former President Barack Obama reportedly made strong comments about President Donald Trump and his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., during a private conversation with Dr. Anthony Fauci at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The remarks were recorded by Fauci in a personal diary that was recently made public after U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. released the documents. According to reports, Obama called Donald Trump an “idiot” and a “pathological liar.” He also used an offensive word to describe Donald Trump Jr. before apologising for his language.
The conversation reportedly took place in 2021 while Fauci was serving as President Joe Biden’s Chief Medical Advisor. At the time, Fauci was facing heavy criticism from many of Trump’s supporters over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fauci strongly supported vaccines, wearing face masks in public, and temporary lockdowns to help slow the spread of the virus. These measures became highly controversial and were strongly opposed by many conservatives.
In his diary, Fauci wrote that he told Obama about what he described as the “crazy” accusations being made against him by some far-right Republicans while thousands of Americans were still dying from COVID-19.
One of those attacks came from Donald Trump Jr., who accused Fauci of carrying out cruel experiments on puppies after reports based on a scientific study circulated online. Trump Jr. also sold clothing and hats featuring the slogan “Fauci Kills Puppies.”
According to Fauci’s diary, Obama reacted by calling Donald Trump Jr. an insulting name before apologising for using such strong language. Fauci wrote that Obama then described Donald Trump as a “hopeless idiot” and a “pathological liar.”
Fauci also said Obama was disappointed that moderate Republicans were not publicly defending him and instead stayed silent while he faced what Obama reportedly viewed as unfair personal attacks.
After the diary became public, many people reacted online. Some social media users praised Obama’s comments, while others criticised them. The remarks quickly spread across X, formerly Twitter, where they sparked another heated political debate.
The release of Fauci’s diary came after Senator Rand Paul received the documents from Kennedy. Paul has repeatedly accused Fauci of misleading the public about the origins of COVID-19 and has continued to push for criminal investigations into his actions during the pandemic.
Many scientists believe COVID-19 most likely began in a live animal market in Wuhan, China. While the possibility of a laboratory leak has been investigated, there is still no conclusive evidence proving the virus escaped from a lab.
Rand Paul has referred Fauci for possible criminal prosecution several times under both the Biden and Trump administrations, arguing that Fauci mishandled aspects of the pandemic response.
During a recent Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, Fauci repeatedly relied on his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, reportedly doing so more than 100 times.
Before refusing to answer many questions, Fauci accused Paul of being determined to see him prosecuted. He claimed the senator had released his unredacted personal diary to embarrass and intimidate him.
Fauci said he believed the hearing was organised in an attempt to make him say something that could later be used against him in court. Following the hearing, Paul and several Republicans said they want Congress to consider holding Fauci in contempt.
