‘Just Threw Up In My Mouth’: Critics Horrified By Donald Trump’s Unexpected ‘Threesome’ Comment

President Donald Trump sparked fresh attention during a speech on Wednesday after joking about awarding himself and his two sons the nation’s highest military honour. While speaking at a public event, Trump made a light-hearted remark that quickly spread across social media because of one particular word he used.
During his speech, Trump pointed to his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who were in the audience, and joked that he should give the three of them the Congressional Medal of Honor. Laughing, he said he would give one medal to himself and one to each of his sons, adding that they would have a “threesome.” The unusual choice of words immediately caught people’s attention online.
Trump continued the joke by saying his sons deserved the medals because of their “genius at hunting,” while he joked that he should receive one for enduring years of investigations related to claims about Russia. His comments drew laughter from some members of the audience.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest military award in the United States. It is presented to members of the armed forces who show extraordinary bravery and risk their lives in combat beyond the call of duty. Neither Donald Trump nor his sons has served in the U.S. military.
The comments were made during the dedication ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. During the event, Trump spoke about Theodore Roosevelt and his son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., noting that they are one of only two father-and-son pairs to have received the Medal of Honor.
Trump then joked that he and his sons could become the first “threesome” to receive the prestigious military decoration. Moments later, he made it clear that he was not being serious.
“No, I’m only kidding,” Trump said. He added that he had thought about the idea but warned that joking in politics can be risky because the media often reports sarcastic comments as if they were serious. He said he was speaking “with a chuckle” but believed the remark would still receive widespread attention.
Despite clarifying that he was joking, Trump’s comments quickly spread online. Many social media users focused almost entirely on his use of the word “threesome,” with clips of the moment being widely shared across different platforms. Critics mocked the comment, while supporters argued it was clearly intended as humour.
Trump has previously joked about receiving the Medal of Honor on other occasions, even though he never served in the military. During the Vietnam War, he received five draft deferments—four because he was attending college and one due to bone spurs in his heels.
As the video circulated, much of the online discussion centred less on the Medal of Honor itself and more on Trump’s unexpected wording. The brief joke became one of the most talked-about moments from his speech, with reactions ranging from amusement to criticism as people debated whether the remark was harmless humour or inappropriate for a sitting president.
