President Donald Trump posted an angry response on Truth Social on Friday evening after two federal judges ruled that his decision to demolish the White House East Wing and replace it with a new ballroom was unlawful.
The judges strongly criticised the way the project was handled, accusing the Trump administration of acting without proper legal authority. Trump had already reacted to the ruling earlier in the day, but he later returned to social media to defend the project and attack the court’s decision.
Trump said the two judges—one appointed by former President Barack Obama and the other by former President Joe Biden—had ruled against what he described as a badly needed “secure ballroom and military complex.” He claimed the proposed building would include security features and a large landing area for drones on its roof. However, his post did not clearly explain how the ballroom would serve a military purpose.
One part of the ruling appeared to upset Trump in particular. The judges reportedly said that every president is only a “temporary tenant” of the White House because the building belongs to the country, not to the person occupying the presidency.
Trump strongly rejected that description. He argued that presidents should not be compared to ordinary tenants who pay rent and must seek permission from a landlord before changing a property. He said presidents are elected by the American people and have the authority to repair, renovate, protect, secure and improve the White House and its grounds.
He also pointed to the long history of changes made to the White House since the building was first constructed in the 1790s. According to Trump, the property has been rebuilt, repaired and renovated many times by previous administrations without presidents having to ask Congress for approval over every change.
Trump insisted that his planned ballroom was part of an effort to make the White House safer, more attractive and more useful for major official events. He argued that blocking the project would interfere with presidential authority and prevent important security improvements from being completed.
The president went even further by describing the court’s ruling as a serious national security threat and a national disgrace. His comments showed that he had no intention of quietly accepting the decision, although any further work on the project could now depend on additional court proceedings or a successful appeal.
